NEWS ALERT

The Sunapee Police Department has been made aware of a particular type of scam call targeting a number of Sunapee residents. In this call, scammers are identifying themselves as members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection and have been able to deliberately falsify the information showing up on caller IDs, commonly known as "spoofing", to disguise their call as coming from the Sunapee Police Department's 603-763-5555 number. These scammers may threaten jail time for non-payment or non-compliance. These calls are only scams, and all of the information provided by the scammers is untrue.

If you are the victim of an online or telephonic scam, or have information regarding an internet related scam, an additional resource beyond reporting to the Sunapee Police Department is the FBI's Cyber Division Unit called IC3. Complaints sent to the Internet Crime Complaints Center (IC3) involve a wide variety of cyber-crimes, including the unlawful appropriation of intellectual property rights, intrusion of computers, economic espionage, online extortion, and international money laundering. IC3 receives reports on a wide variety of fraudulent schemes, including phishing, spam, and payment fraud to name a few. To make a complaint, click on the following link: www.ic3.gov

The Sunapee Police Department urges the community to remain vigilant; Double check the validity of communications you receive and never give any personal or sensitive information to anyone you do not know or trust. Ask questions and be persistent!
