Sunapee 250th Anniversary Plans

Town of Sunapee Sestercentennial Committee

The Sunapee Sestercentennial Committee has been meeting for the last 14 months planning events to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Sunapee’s founding.  Many events and activities are being planned for the celebration weekend of August 17-19, 2018.

Many events are being planned by the Committee and local organizations to include a traditional street parade; antique boat parade; music concerts; photo display; a community breakfast; fireworks; a street fair; burying of a time capsule; community photo; at least one Sunapee High School reunion; and other on-going events.

Currently a group of Sunapee residents, headed by Becky Rylander, are making a town quilt featuring Sunapee people, scenes and places to be ready to display during the celebration. To get more information about, or become involved with the quilt project, please contact Becky at

Sunapee Cove Assisted Living has signed on to sponsor and coordinate a musical event and the Sunapee Recreation Department will be bringing Draw the Line, an Aerosmith Tribute band to perform over the weekend.  Charlie & Marion Hafner of Chadwick Funeral Home have kindly donated a vault for us to collect Sunapee memorabilia to be buried as a time capsule to be opened at the 350th celebration.   Other local organizations are planning events to be held.  More information will be forthcoming as plans are finalized.

The NH Division of Motor Vehicles has granted Sunapee residents permission to replace the front license plate with a 250th commemorative license plate, designed by Mike McLaughlin of Grantham.  Stocker Graniteworks has designed a commemorative granite arrowhead for the anniversary.  Information on sales and purchase locations will be coming out shortly.

Other commemorative items and fundraising opportunities will be announced as soon as they are available.  Residents, organizations and businesses wishing to get involved in the planning or wanting more information can go to the Committee web page at click on Boards and Commissions, then select Sestercentennial Committee or email the committee at

It is the mission of the Sunapee 250th Committee to advocate for funding, programming of events and coordination of citizens to attend the events. The committee will further advise and assist the Town with facilitating and communication of events throughout the year so to bring the community together in celebration of our 250th.
