The Sunapee Fire & EMS Department is an on-call "volunteer" organization. There are no full-time or career employees. The dedicated men & women who volunteer to serve the Town's public safety needs all have regular jobs from which they respond when a call comes in. We are very grateful to the employers and families who allow and tolerate us leaving work and home activities to attend to the emergency needs of the community.
The original charter of the fire department from 1873, amended in 1904, stated the firefighters were paid $1 per hour to cover "materials and equipment purchased". In March 2013 a points plan was put into effective so that the members earn points for responses to calls, training & meetings. Compensation for points earned is issued monthly and quarterly.
